Rectal prolapse Surgery

Rectal prolapse surgery

Rectal prolapse can be treated surgically either by performing an abdominal operation, or via a perineal operation performed from below.

1. Laparoscopic rectopexy. Mr McArthur has extensive experience of performing laparoscopic rectopexy, during which a keyhole operation is undertaken to secure the rectum inside the pelvis, preventing it from prolapsing down.

2. Delorme’s procedure / Altmeier’s. These two different operations repair the prolapse from below. They can be performed in patients who are less fit and in whom a general anaesthetic would carry a high risk; instead being carried out under spinal anaesthetic.
