Procedure for prolapse and haemorrhoids (PPH)

OThis operation is usually performed under general anaesthetic (although local or regional anaesthetics are also an option) and we would usually expect you to be able to go home the same day. PPH is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the prolapse of haemorrhoidal tissue. A unique stapling technique is used to pull the swollen anal cushions back into their normal position. The titanium staples used in PPH are tiny - only a few millimetres long.

People who have PPH are usually given an enema to use on the morning of their surgery. It is also recommended that they take a gentle laxative twice a day, for two days before the surgery. The actual procedure generally takes about 45 minutes. There will be some post-operative pain from PPH, but we would expect patients to be able to resume normal activities within a few days of leaving the hospital. As with all procedures, there are some risks specific for this form of anal surgery. You will have the opportunity to discuss the benefits and risks of PPH surgery with your consultant.
